The Process

What Is Eco-Friendly Screen Printing?

Eco-friendly screen printing is a low-impact version of traditional silk-screening that replaces PVC-based plastisol with water-based or discharge inks. Instead of sitting on the surface as a plastic film, the pigment soaks into the fibre and dyes the fabric itself — leaving a soft, breathable, almost no-feel print.

Because these inks carry no phthalates or heavy metals and clean up with water rather than harsh solvents, the process is compatible with organic textile supply chains and meaningfully lighter on the environment than standard plastisol.

At Linushi we run it end-to-end as a factory: we source the sustainable blanks, print with the right eco ink for your fabric and colours, then finish and private-label — so your whole product, not just the artwork, holds up to a sustainability claim.

How It Works

How Our Eco Screen Printing Runs

Artwork & Separation

We prep your design and separate it into individual colour layers, mapping each to a Pantone reference and recommending spot or simulated-process for photoreal art.

Screen Prep & Strike-Off

Reclaimable mesh screens are coated and exposed, then a strike-off print is run so you can approve placement, colour and hand-feel before bulk.

Water-Based / Discharge Print

We print with the right eco ink for your fabric — water-based on lights, discharge on dark 100% cotton — pushing pigment into the fibre for a soft finish.

Cure, Wash-Test & QC

Prints are heat-cured for wash durability, then wash-tested and inspected for coverage, registration and crack resistance before packing.

Choosing An Ink

Water-Based vs Plastisol: An Honest Comparison

No single ink wins every job. Here’s how the three eco-leaning options compare so you can brief us with confidence.

Water-Based

Best for: light & mid organic cotton, soft fashion prints, brands that want a no-feel finish.

Pros: PVC- and phthalate-free, soft breathable hand, dyes the fibre. Trade-off: weaker opacity on dark garments and needs skilled curing.

Discharge

Best for: bold prints on dark 100% cotton without a heavy plastic layer.

Pros: removes the garment dye and replaces it, giving a vintage-soft result on darks. Trade-off: works best on 100% cotton and needs higher cure heat.

Non-Phthalate Plastisol

Best for: bright, opaque graphics and very high-volume runs.

Pros: easy to run, vivid one-hit whites on darks, hard-wearing. Trade-off: still a plastic film — a cleaner, but not fully eco, option.

Need detail-heavy, photographic art instead? Our dye sublimation printing services may be the better route for all-over, full-colour polyester work.

FAQ

Eco Screen Printing — Common Questions

Is eco-friendly screen printing really better for the environment than plastisol?

Yes. Water-based and discharge inks carry no PVC or phthalates, clean up with water instead of hazardous solvents, and biodegrade far more readily than the plastic film plastisol leaves behind. No print method is fully impact-free, but for organic and recycled garments water-based is the most responsible mainstream option.

Can you print water-based ink on dark garments?

Water-based ink has lower opacity, so on dark fabrics we use discharge printing instead — it removes the garment’s dye and replaces it with your colour for a bold, soft result. Discharge works best on dark 100% cotton; for blends we’ll advise the best approach.

Do you work with GOTS-certified organic cotton?

Yes. We source GOTS-ready organic cotton and print it with inks selected for organic supply chains. This matters because a GOTS claim covers the whole product — an organic blank printed with standard plastisol can’t carry the label, so the ink choice is as important as the fabric.

Is water-based screen printing more expensive than plastisol?

Per piece it’s usually comparable, though it can run slightly higher because it demands more skill and careful curing. Pricing depends on colours, quantity, fabric and finishing — send your brief and we’ll return an exact quote.

How durable are water-based prints in the wash?

When properly heat-cured on cotton, water-based prints are durable for the life of the garment. Every order is wash-tested and inspected for crack resistance before it ships.

What ink certifications and standards can you meet?

We can supply inks selectable to OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT and for use in GOTS-compatible production chains, aligned with ZDHC goals for eliminating hazardous chemicals. Tell us your target certification and we’ll match the ink and blank accordingly.

What is your minimum order and turnaround?

Our MOQ is 30 pieces per design. Turnaround depends on quantity, ink type and finishing — we confirm a production timeline with your quote and keep you updated through each stage.

Can you supply the blanks and private-label them, or do I send my own?

Both. As an OEM/ODM factory we can source sustainable blanks, print, relabel with your woven tags and package retail-ready — or print onto garments you supply. Most brands prefer the full service so the whole product is consistent.
